A New Approach To Spider Bite Care

Until now, there was no reliable method to confirm a brown recluse spider bite. This allows for an environment of misdiagnosis and misplaced treatments. Realizing the potential for success of an accurate spider bite diagnosis technology, our team has developed SpiderTek. A fast and effective method to diagnose the presence of spider venom in a wound, as little as a few picograms*. This allows medical professionals to accurately prescribe treatment to patients.

*1 picogram= 1 billionth of a milligram.

SpiderTek is new approach to spider bite wound diagnosis and care. Our brown recluse spider bite test allows individuals to quickly and efficiently determine if a given wound is the result of a brown recluse (Loxosceles Reclusa) spider bite. By determining the presence of spider venom, SpiderTek drastically reduces the number of false diagnoses improving wound treatment and saving lives.

Brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) is indigenous to the Central United States with relative species throughout the Southwestern United States.

Watch Dr. Stoecker and Dr. Jonathan Green discuss the innovative technology behind our SpiderTek swab kit.

The Science

For many patients and doctors, the likely diagnosis for a hard-to-identify skin lesion is a brown recluse spider bite. But it could be skin cancer, a Staphylococcus infection or a rare and deadly Streptococcus “flesh-eating bacteria” infection. Determining quickly if the lesion is the result of a spider bite can speed the proper treatment and keep a bad health situation from getting worse.

-Mizzou Magazine

Developed by Dr. Jonathan Green, SpiderTek utilizes an antibody detection method, ELISA, to detect the presence of brown recluse venom in the blood of patients. This technology is an adaptation of Dr. Green's antibody detection method utilized to determine pregnancy in cattle. The adaptation of this method to spider bites means that spider bite venom can be detected in extremely small quantities (as few as 10 picograms), rapidly (in as little as 2 hours).

Dr. Jonathan Green and Dr. William V. Stoecker have developed an innovative immunoassay spider venom detection technology.
